Third International Conference on Exploration

High-level International Space Exploration Platform

Lucca (Italy) – 10 November 2011

Two European high-level conferences at ministerial level have already been organised (Prague, 23 October 2009 and Brussels, 21 October 2010) where all main international countries involved in space exploration have been invited. These conferences have identified the need for further discussions at high-level on international coordination and cooperation in the domain. The participants of the Brussels Conference identified the need for policy discussions at international level and called for the organisation of a first meeting of an international, high-level space exploration platform by the end of 2011, marking the evolution from the two conferences, prepared by Europe, to a truly global context.

The proposed objectives for the Third International Space Exploration Conference/First High-Level International Exploration Platform, which will take place in Lucca (Italy) on 10 November 2011, are:

  • to maintain the impulse given by the first and second international Space Exploration Conferences, by elaborating further the views, at the level of non-binding political discussions, of the participants on the future of international collaboration in this domain. Putting in place such a high-level dialogue is the main objective of the Lucca Conference (with proposed goals and working principles).
  • to advance the identification of future collaboration domains. To that end the discussions could lead to agreeing on the need to explore possible cooperation and collaboration at high-level potentially starting with the fields that are pillars for exploration, such as:
    o enabling technologies
    o space transportation
o manned and unmanned orbital infrastructures, in particular the International Space Station, but also planned and future infrastructures,
    o robotic exploration

The objective of the Lucca conference is not to set up a decision-making body, rather an enabler for a high-level structured dialogue in order to define the next steps towards such high-level cooperation and coordination.

The official statements will be interpreted in EN, IT, ZH, RU in active and FR, DE in passive.
