Safety aspects drive the requirement to implement fracture control for ISS payloads. ESA Payload Safety Review Panel review the design of payloads during Safety Reviews at different design phases. If hazards to crew, ISS or launcher due to structural failures are envisage it will formally be required the application of fracture control requirements. Typical hazard that require fracture control is the possibility of collision of a released payload or part of it against launcher/ISS structure or crew. Anyway other hazards have to be considered such as explosion of pressure vessels, release of toxic, biohazardous or flammable materials due to containers rupture or leakage. The presentation provides a list of such hazards that requires fracture control and the process required to get the Fracture Control Certification for ISS payloads.
