The Technical Museum of Speyer

On more than 16,000 sq.m. indoors and 150,000 sq.m outdoors, the Technical Museum of Speyer displays more than 3,000 samples from the world of aeronautics, astronautics and transport. Since 2008, the museum also hosts Europe’s largest space exhibition. This exhibition documents the evolution of manned spaceflight and features numerous samples among them the Russian “space shuttle” Buran, the museum’s new highlight, and an ESA space-lab training module. Apart from the space exhibition the museum features several aircraft that can be explored from inside, among them the giant Antonov AN-22 transport plane, a Boeing 747 Jumbo-Jet, once the largest passenger aircraft of the world, and a huge selection of jet fighters and helicopters. In addition, a German Navy submarine, a number of steam engines, historical automobiles and mechanical music instruments can be visited.

Historical Speyer

After the visit to the technical museum, interested participants may either enjoy free time to explore the city on their own or join a guided tour through historical Speyer which is located just in walking distance from the museum.

Speyer, the venerable imperial city on the Rhine, looks back on about 2000 years of history and a rich and turbulent past. Religious architecture steeped in history, impressive facades of various styles, winding alleys and romantic squares express the character of the city. Must-sees are the old city gate and the Jewish baths. The Cathedral of Speyer – the city’s icon – is among the most significant and largest romantic buildings in Germany. Founded in 1030 A.D. by the Emperor Conrad the Second, the building also served as the burial site of eight emperors and empresses. Since 1981, it has enjoyed the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
