Human Factors and Error Management
Bühle, Eugen
Lufthansa

Lufthansa Airlines has a total of 338 airplanes. There are meanwhile more than 1700 flights per day that makes more than 620 000 flights per year. Lessons learned in the Airline Industry are always bloody lessons. Therefore the prevention of incidents and accidents is the highest goal in flight operations. Everybody in the company is working for the highest possible safety standard to reduce risk from any flight - before, during and after flight operations. The “Probable Cause” of accidents is by far dominated by the so called “Human Errors”. Therefore ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) and Lufthansa itself developed special training philosophies, taking into account these findings to reduce the risk in flight operations. All incidents and accidents happening in the world of Commercial Air Transport are deeply analysed in the Lufthansa Safety Department. “Lessons Learned” are taken into account to develop “Standard Operating Procedures” and to implement the necessary training sessions in the simulators and in theoretical and practical “Crew Resource Management” trainings. There is an overall Lufthansa strategy of risk assessment and risk management which consists of 10 different parts. These different parts of the preventive strategy of Lufthansa to reduce and manage risks and threats will be presented in the lecture.
