Use of Probabalistic Risk Analysis within the Space Shuttle Program
Canga, Michael
NASA/Johnson Space Center

Within the Space Shuttle Program (SSP), probabilistic risk analysis (PRA) results have been incorporated into the SSP management process to support risk informed decision making. In order to be effective, the PRA must be credible, provide insight into specific management concerns, and be presented in a way to effectively communicate the analysis’ conclusions. This presentation provides a brief overview of SSP PRA activities and their integration with the program. Examples of specific products which have been generated by SSP are given to demonstrate use of the PRA in an operating program. The presentation concludes with a summary of insights to be gained from the SSP experience.
