Leveraging Lean Sigma to Develop Affordable Solutions

An Affordability process was developed at Raytheon Missile Systems which leverages the following tools to reduce product cost: Cost As an Independent Variable (CAIV), Design To Cost (DTC), Design For Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA), Lean Manufacturing and Statistical Process Control (SPC). In the missile business, production costs dominate the Total Ownership Cost profile, as O&S costs are typically not large. A step by step methodology is presented with real-world examples from development programs.
